Ah, yes! Composer and professor, Hildegard Westerkamp described soundwalking in 1974 as “any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment.” From there, notable artists such as Janet Cardiff created Soundwalks by recording themselves walking along a set path, while overlaying their own voice as a narrator and guide for the journey. For this project, Root of Wonder will collaborate with each Writer to format the best Soundwalk style for each piece. That means it could become pure sound, voice-over, music, and any combination or creation in between.
Writers will have as long as they need to finish their initial writing. Once the writing has been uploaded to the Google Form, the process will take around 1-2 months to complete. This depends on everyone's availability for collaboration, and how much the writer wants to be involved in the Soundwalk final creation.
As much as you like! That being said, final sound walks will range in length, but more than 45 minutes of content will most likely be edited down. This process will always involve the writer, so write as much as serves the story you want to tell.
Nope! Your writing can take any form, from a haiku to prose to a play. The format doesn't matter, because all pieces will be adapted to the Soundwalk format while collaborating with Max and Root of Wonder. The project is designed to allow writers from all backgrounds to create without barriers.
